Em
There was a woman at the

Am
Waiving her arm s around,
Em
"Come here," she
Verse 2
wailed.
"There's a puppy on the rails.
Am
D
I think it has been hurt."
G
I raced down to where she
Em
was pointing
Am
D
to see a ball of fur covered with dirt.

Verse 3
G
Am
D
"It must be dead," I said to her,
G
as I turned to leave.
Em
"No, it's alive," she cried.
"Just before you got here,
Am
D
I swear, I saw it breath."
Em
"And I'll watch
Verse 4
for the train
if you'll jump down.
Am
D
Pick him up and hand it to me.
G
If we take him to the vet,
Em
if we save his life,
D
G
Think how wonderful that'll be."
Verse 5
C
I looked into the tunnel,
G
there was no train in sight.
C
I looked at the furry thing lying there,
G
D
a truly pitiful sight.
Em
"Look," I said. "I'm not
sure that's a puppy.
D
Could be a lice- infested, long- haired rat.
G
And it's gotta be dead,
Em
so I'm not jumping down,"
D
and I figured that that was that.
G
Verse 6
Am
But by now more people arrived on the platform,
"Help. There's a puppy
G
on the tracks."
Em
They looked for a moment,
and like true New Yorkers,
Am
D
collectively turned their backs.
Em
She said, "Somebody's
gotta do something,"
Am
As we slowly turned
G
"Someone must have the
Em
courage to save him.
D
It's a puppy. It's man's
Verse 7
G
"Trains come through here
Am
every few minutes."
D
G
Said a man wearing madras pants.
Em
"And it's way too dangerous.
You'd have to be nuts,
Am
D
to take such a foolish chance."
Em
But the woman was insistent. "In
the time we've been debating,"
Am
She said "One of you could've
G
Handed him to me,
Em
by now that puppy could be
D
G
at the animal shelter cross town!"
Verse 8
C
We felt bad, but no one would do it.
G
Then a transit cop appeared.
C
Down at the other end of the platform
G
We all yelled "Hey you!
Em
He ran to us, I pointed to the
train tracks and said,
Am
D
"See that thing, furry, not to big.
G
What do you think it is,
Em
Am
he looked and said,...
Verse 9
Am
"What? You mean that wig?"
D
Verse 10
G
Am
We stepped back. A rush of embarrassment
D
G
swept right through the crowd.
Em
Accented by the blast of
a train whistle,
Am
D
Approaching and growing quite loud.
" train flattened that furry thing.
Am
D
We got on board, went on our way.
G
Em
Grateful that we did not risk our lives
D
G
to save a life of a wig that day.
Verse 11
G
So if you see something
Am
D
on the train tracks,
G
Take a tip from me.
Em
Don't let anybody talk
you into saving it,
Am
D
It's best to just let it be.
Em
And if you see a person wearing
Am
D
what looks like a puppy on their head,
G
Em
Don't call the police, it's only a wig,...
Verse 12
Am
D
G
..and chances are it's already dead.
