Hey, this one's a chain around my leg.
When did you make that one up,
Woody?
This one?
Yeah.
Yesterday up in your office.
What?
Yesterday up in your office.
Where'd you get the idea for it?
Well, I was looking through a magazine
here a while back
and it was showing conditions down
south where I come from
and all around there in
McAllister,
Oklahoma,
the state penitentiary there.
They have what they call chain gangs,
all the southern prisons do. I guess all of them do everywhere.
Anyway, I was looking at all these pictures
and I saw a line of boys.
They was laying out in the sun,
just completely exhausted from making biggums out of littlings.
Big chain, the biggest thing
in the picture was a chain.
and it was around one of the boys' legs
an d it run around all the boys' legs
and the chain had what
I could count there,
about six links,
six big links between every man.
So I just got thinking
what each one of them links
could stand for,
and I made up this here song
called
Chain
Around
My
Leg.
Nothing to lose but the chain.
Got a mighty long chain on my leg,
mighty long chain on my leg.
I've lost everything in the world
except that chain around my leg.
First link is trouble, first link is trouble,
first link is trouble boy.
Chain that's round my leg.
Second link is sorrow,
Second link is sorrow,
Second link is sorrow, boy.
Chain that's round my leg.
Third link I work on, third link I work on,
third link I work on, but I'm a cheater, I'm a lame.
Old clinks my sledge, old clinks my sledge,
old clinks my sledge,
Boys, that's chain that's
around my leg.
Fifth link's no funny.
Fifth link's no funny.
Fifth link's no funny.
Boys, that's a chain
that's around my leg.
Six links, sweetheart, six links, my sweetheart,
six links, my sweetheart, she has your alibi.
Nothing to lose but this chain,
Nothing to lose but this chain,
Done, lost everything else,
Except that chain that's around my leg.
