Verse 1
D
One of the most beautifully
constructed tunes I've ever done
is the next one we'll listen
to.
This was written by a sidekick
of Gene Autry.
A lot of you are familiar with Gene Autry,
the cowboy actor.
The fellow who wrote this is Johnny Bond,
who's appeared in a lot
of the pictures with Gene Autry.
It's a true western song.
The title of this is the name of the bar
in the little cow town at
the end of the trail.
Very, very pitiful story.
Fool's Paradise.
As I write this letter to you,
A
G
D
darling I can't hold the teardrops from my eyes
G
For at sundown I will lay a -dyin'
A
D
At the door of the fool's paradise
A
Rode into this cattle town this morning
G
D
Left my bird to check the market price
G
And I walked into the nearest barroom,
A
D
they called it the fool's paradise.
There the crowds, gay and girls,
G
D
And the men were playin' cards and dice
G
So I stepped up to the bar to join them
A
D
What a grand place, this fool's paradise
Bm
F#
It was then I showed to them your pic ture
Bm
D
I passed it around once or twice
G
D
Then a man insulted your sweet honor
A
D
At the bar of the fool's paradise
A
So I slapped his face and I told him, I says,
G
you eat them words mister or drone,
D
that's my advice and he said well
somebody might get hurt inside
but I'll be glad to meet you in the street
G
A
at sundown at sundown in
D
front of the fool's paradise
A
so goodbye my darling may God bless you
G
D
I go to make the sacrifice
G
And if ever you visit old Dodge City
A
D
Remember the fool's paradise
